About Me

Hi! I’m Derek Kimball - a former teacher, nonprofit founder, executive director, and development director. I live in Waterloo with my wife, 5 kids, and our dog. I’m an aspiring minimalist who enjoys intentional conversations, DIY projects, and trips with my family.

After a decade in the classroom, I founded and led a nonprofit supporting children and families impacted by foster care. We grew our programs each year and raised over $1 million. After six years, I became the development director at our local community foundation, working with dozens of fundholders - including nonprofit leaders navigating planned giving and long term sustainability.

One thing has risen to the top: I love helping nonprofits build fundraising systems rooted in relational stewardship and data informed strategy. I am especially passionate about organizations directly impacting children and families. I’m a talker by nature and an analyzer by trade and love using those skills to empower nonprofits to do more for our communities.

There are a myriad of strategies around fundraising. For small to midsized nonprofits, nothing is more sustainable than building trusted relationships with long-time partners. Building sustainability doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does take intentionality.

If you’re interested in building more sustainability in your fundraising - and have fun doing it - I’d love to chat.
